Some users may receive an error message when trying to restore the GRANDMA data files into Brother's Keeper. We have not been able to determine why this happens to some (though not all) users. If you receive a message like this, you must copy the BK6DATA file from the CD to your hard drive and then restore it from there. Follow the instructions below to do this. Please keep in mind that some details of this process may differ slightly depending on the Windows operating system that you are using. The instructions below are based on a Windows 7 operating system.
1. Make sure that the GRANDMA 7 CD is in our computer's disc drive.
2. Click on the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your screen and then select "Computer" from the menu bar.
3. A window showing the various storage devices on your computer. It will look something like this:
4. Left-click once on the device that holds the "GM7" disc. This will open a new screen showing the contents of the disc, as shown below. If left-clicking once actually opens a file on the disc rather than showing disc contents, you can also right-click on the GM7 line and select "open in new window."
5. Click and hold the BK6DATA file, and then drag and drop it onto the (C:) disk line on the left side of the window. This will start the copying process, which may take a few minutes. A box should appear showing you how long the copying process will take.
6. When the file has finished copying, go back to Brother's Keeper, Click File and then Restore Data. At the next screen, click on "Pick a different drive." This will open a screen on which you specify the drive from which to restore the data, as seen below. Make sure that you select c: in section 1, and that you have highlighted the top line (c:\) in section 2. Click OK.
7. On the next screen, click Restore from c:\
8. A list of file names will appear. Click on the Restore box .The data files will be copied onto your hard disk. This process may take several minutes, depending on the processing speed of your computer. File names will be added to the list on the screen as each data file is loaded.
9. When the file loading process is completed, you will be asked if you have another diskette that contains text or picture files. Click on Cancel. The next box notifies you that files have been restored. Click on OK.
10. You will be asked if you want to create a recovery file. Click No. The GRANDMA 7 CD already functions as a "recovery file."
11. The bottom line of the Brother's Keeper screen should read: Names: 1250285 Families: 393511
The GRANDMA 7 data files have loaded successfully and are ready for use.
